Time flies. It is 11 years since Galway opted to play in the Leinster Championship, initially on a trial basis of three years. A big leap for Galway hurling at the time, which had been resisted by many, it is now an accepted system for Galway. It has not been all plain sailing, such as the lack of home games, request for equal financial status and representation on the Leinster Council, but on the field Galway has contested seven finals and won the title final three times. The 2018 Leinster round-robin game between Galway and Kilkenny at Pearse Stadium in Salthill was Galway’s first home Leinster Championship match. It was the first provincial championship game, excluding the Connacht championship, to take place in County Galway since 1965.

I am always going on and on about rugby and, this week, I am going to begin with a nice spot of good GAA news for County Westmeath.

“Our Lady’s Boys Club has taught me three things. First it has taught me a better knowledge of my Religion and its principles; secondly it has taught me to seek to improve myself, and thirdly it has taught me that real happiness is to be found in helping others rather than in seeking self.” These words, spoken in 1960 by a young man who had grown up in the club and was by then a member of its committee, summed up beautifully the work the club has tried to accomplish since its foundation in 1941.

Dr Siobhán Howard, from Breaffy, Castlebar, and lecturer in psychology in Mary Immaculate College (MIC) was recently awarded a 2016 Royal Irish Academy Charlemont Grant to fund a research project studying the biological stress reactions of military veterans.

An 82-year-old city man, who survived three heart attacks and has been volunteering with the local heart and stroke charity Croí for 19 years, has received a prestigious international award.
